Why Finance Brands Struggle With Influencer Marketing (and How to Do It Anyway)
Finance is simultaneously the best and worst category for creator marketing. Best, because finance audiences are worth more per head than any other niche and finance creators have unusual trust with them. Worst, because your compliance team is correct to be nervous.
The core problem: a creator’s value is their unscripted voice, and unscripted financial claims are how companies end up in front of a regulator. In Canada, “finfluencer” marketing has been on the CSA’s radar for several years, and the FTC’s rules in the US work similarly. When a creator overpromises on your product’s returns, the exposure lands on you, not just them.
Most finance brands respond in one of two bad ways. They either write the entire ad read themselves, producing a hostage-video segment the audience skips and the creator resents, or they avoid the channel entirely and let fintech competitors with braver legal teams take the audience.
The process that works
Brief on claims, not on script. Give the creator a one-page document listing what can be said, what can’t, and the exact required disclosures. Let them write their own words inside those walls. The content stays theirs, the claims stay yours, and compliance reviews a claims sheet instead of policing tone.
Build one review round into the contract with a defined turnaround. Compliance gets to see the segment before publish, once, with 48 or 72 hours to respond. Open-ended approval rights kill schedules and relationships.
And vet for disclosure history specifically. A creator who has run sponsorships for years with clean, consistent disclosure is demonstrating an operational habit your compliance team can rely on. This is one of the specific things we check before pitching any creator to a finance brand, because in this category a disclosure lapse isn’t embarrassing, it’s reportable.
Finance brands that get this right buy reach their competitors are afraid of. The ones we work with treat compliance as a brief-writing problem rather than a reason to stay out. If that sounds like the problem you’re stuck on, talk to us.
